UnidenHosting, a Colorado Springs, Colorado webhosting provider since 2005 has developed continuously over time, acquiring local customers, businesses and adapting to new situations – qualities which have allowed it to grow successfully as an owner-operated business.
AllBay, Inc. a web hosting provider located in San Jose, California colocating over 200 owned servers in a San Jose Datacenter to host and support a large customer base of over 60,000 websites and domains which was acquired by UnidenHosting.com, LLC since the acquisition beginning in 2011.
This has been on the cards for some time, probably the best part after acquiring AllBay, Inc. We’ve gone through denial, acceptance and finally, action. Why the change? CEO and Owner of UnidenHosting, Johnny Willis will be stepping down as CEO in the beginning year of 2013. That’s why.
Every year, thousands of Americans at various ages consider serving in the military. You can make the military a very rewarding growth experience. Since Johnny was a child, he's always sought to serving his country and making a career with the United States Marine Corps and announced he will be devoting a majority of his time into serving. Joining the military is nearly always a life defining decision.
A successful stint in the Military depends heavily on trust, but it relies on discipline. That discipline starts in earnest the minute a recruit arrives at Basic Training. A higher discipline requires acceptance that all feedback is positive and the key to achieving the personal discipline necessary to succeed in the Military.
The U.S. Marines say that “The change is forever…”. It’s true that you can see a significant and positive change as quickly as graduation from Basic Training. The military experience will shape your life through the development of self-reliance and relationships that sometimes last a lifetime. People who serve will learn how to react quickly to high stress situations, and will rely on the training to help others through traumatic events. There are many educational opportunities available in the military from occupational training courses to full college tuition paid in undergraduate and graduate programs. Choosing the military as a career also has its benefits (retirement and medical) and challenges.
Johnny's continue dedication and devotion to the protection of the United States has been long noticed. Johnny announced today, he will be spending more time dedicated to serving his country with the United States Marine Corps.
"Some people might even see it as, I'm stepping down and I'm taking my name with me. Maybe that's true because Uniden was my brand. But AllBay is just a stronger word. We need that." said Johnny.
Young, ambitious, independent and successful. Why leave such a prosperous future?
"You know, that's actually a really great question. Those who know me, know that I work two jobs. I started this company as a hobby of mine and I didn't think it would take off as well as it did. I mean I knew I'd have a few hundred customers or so, but never in the thousands! I'm just a normal guy with a successful internet company. It's really cool! But my duty has always been to serve my country, it's always been inside of me." Johnny said, "I don't want to look back when I'm older and say I wish I would have joined, or be one of those people that say 'yeah, I was going to join the military BUT' ..Nah man, that's not me. But let’s just take a moment and let’s think about this - if you ask someone who's rich, they'll tell you that money isn't everything. But people only say that when they already have it, not before they have it. And we all know that statement is true. Before you eat, you'll say you’re hungry and you can eat a whole cow, but after you've already eaten and your stomach is full, you don't even want to look at another cow. Do you see the trend here? Being able to join something far bigger than myself, you or anyone else, to be a part of defending something to defend my country is a duty, it’s a code of ethics and a code of honor. You can't make a warrior out of anyone. True warriors stand up to the crowd. My passion has always been military, even when running UnidenHosting, I had my own game servers and they were all FPS military games. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault -- that's my game! People always ask me, to just wait longer until I join because of the war but that's the right time to join and this right now is the right time for me to join. UnidenHosting is right where it needs to be, or actually I should say AllBay since I've changed the name, but we're in the right position with the right people to keep it running forward."
So, why the name change? In short, Johnny felt AllBay carried a stronger name to provide service. AllBay meaning all bays of the world can receive web hosting services. "You know, when you think of the word Uniden, you think of the phone company, huh. I didn't start UnidenHosting under the phone company, I started it because it was slang for United which was already taken. Was always made fun of that though, never laughed at it as a joke though" Johnny Willis said, UnidenHosting President and CEO.
There have been enough teams wasting extraordinary amounts of energy and money on self-indulgent branding after acquiring a company when the underlying product or service is exploding after the main person in management steps down. That was not how Johnny wanted to do things, and so he made the choice to follow through with AllBay which described our setup. In hindsight, we may have been a little too lean in our approach.
As time went by we started to pick up on some not-so-subtle signals that our name had a few drawbacks. We would frequently run into customers asking if we owned Uniden Corporation which provides consumer electronics and receive almost daily messages that weren’t intended for us. Someone even called the office once to ask for help installing their wired security.
Regardless, our reputation and team have grown since 2005 offering web hosting and game server services to the world, and more often than not we go toe-to-toe with the highest-profile players in our space. Last year alone UnidenHosting increased sales from just under 45 sign-ups a day to over 60. And this in spite of never really doing much to promote ourselves or our work.
More recently, we have started to share our ideas and opinions more to our customers, and it’s been a great experience both for us as a business, and personally for the people behind the content. However, with each notable success, we can’t help feeling that we’re investing too much into a name shared by a popular company. It’s diluting our long-term impact. And so, it’s time for a change.
Which leads us to our new name, AllBayORG, meaning ‘Serving all bays of the world’. If UnidenHosting was about how we were set up, AllBayORG is about why we were set up. For us, it captures the essence of what we do—working alongside forward-thinking businesses to help carve out a better path to the future.
As a team, we feel fortunate to work with Johnny Willis, both in scale and sector and with his grand ambitions to change the world. In 2010 alone, we helped revolutionize the company network into green hosting for new and existing customers around the world; we worked with global companies to transform predictability on large-scale projects, and we helped startup websites and companies for tackle web hosting solutions.
It’s this transformative nature of technology that the name AllBayORG aims to encapsulate.
Renaming is only the first of several steps. But, we didn’t want to wait until everything was perfect before releasing it. So of course, we’re following a leaner approach and rolling out what we have, when we have it. For now, we just switched out the logo and directed the domain name. Can’t get much leaner than that. Next items on the backlog are new brand identity and site. Until then we’ll leave you with this.
After we decided to move ahead with the rename we thought it best to change AllBay, Inc. too and register AllBayORG as a trademark.
The change will be completed by the start of the fiscal year 2013.
